Villa Cimbrone

A historic villa in Ravello above the Amalfi Coast, now a hotel. Home of the famous Terrace of Infinity.

Villa Cimbrone stands on the rocky Cimbronium headland in Ravello. It is first mentioned in the 11th century. In the early 20th century the Englishman Ernest William Beckett (later Lord Grimthorpe) extensively rebuilt and enlarged the villa, using architectural elements brought from elsewhere in Italy, and laid out the gardens anew.

Today the villa is a hotel and its gardens are open to visitors. Together with the other monuments of the Amalfi Coast it is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

History

In the Middle Ages the villa belonged to the noble Accongiogioco and Fusco families, then to the convent of Santa Chiara. In the second half of the 19th century the historian Ferdinand Gregorovius wrote about it. In 1904 Ernest Beckett bought the villa and turned it into an eclectic ensemble with gardens.

Views from the rooms

The gardens and terrace look out over the Gulf of Salerno and the Amalfi Coast.
