Venice, Italy
The 14th-century Gothic Palazzo Dandolo by St Mark's Square — a hotel since 1824.
The Danieli (formerly Hotel Danieli) is a five-star hotel in Venice, now run by Four Seasons. Its central wing is Palazzo Dandolo, built in the late 14th century by a branch of the noble Dandolo family. The hotel also occupies neighbouring 14th–15th-century buildings.
The main façade faces the Riva degli Schiavoni and St Mark's Basin, a few minutes from St Mark's Square.
In the 16th century the building was divided among family members; in the 17th century it belonged to the Mocenigo and Bernardo families and hosted society receptions — in 1629 Monteverdi's opera “Proserpina rapita” was performed at the wedding of Giustiniana Mocenigo. In 1822 Giuseppe Dal Niel, known as Danieli, rented the first floor, and in 1824 he bought the whole building and turned it into a hotel.
Lagoon-side rooms look onto St Mark's Basin and the island of San Giorgio Maggiore.
For a first “just like the movies” trip to Venice, anniversaries and lovers of historic interiors.
