The Gothic palazzo of Doge Andrea Gritti on the Grand Canal, opposite Santa Maria della Salute. A hotel since 1895.
Palazzo Pisani Gritti is a Venetian Gothic palace on the north bank of the Grand Canal in the San Marco district, opposite the church of Santa Maria della Salute. In the 16th century it was the residence of Doge Andrea Gritti.
Today it houses The Gritti Palace (Marriott, The Luxury Collection): 82 rooms including 10 suites, the Club del Doge restaurant, the Gritti Terrace right above the canal, and Bar Longhi.
The original 14th-century building was remodelled in Gothic style for the Pisani family in 1475. From 1525 it was the private residence of Doge Andrea Gritti. The canal façade was once decorated with frescoes by Giorgione, now lost. In the 19th century John Ruskin lived here with his wife Effie. The palazzo became a hotel in 1895; a major restoration took place in 2011–2013.
Canal-side rooms look onto the Grand Canal and the dome of Santa Maria della Salute.
For romantic Venice, dinner on the water and film lovers: scenes from films by Antonioni and Woody Allen were shot here.
