Bangkok, Thailand

Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok

One of Thailand's first hotels (1876), on the banks of the Chao Phraya. The historic Authors’ Wing and river views.

Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok stands on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. The hotel dates its founding to 1876, when the River Wing opened. In 1881 it was bought by the Danish entrepreneur Hans Niels Andersen, and in 1887 Siam's first luxury hotel, with 40 rooms, opened to a design by the Italian architects Cardu & Rossi.

Today the hotel is run by Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group.

History

The first Oriental opened after the Bowring Treaty was signed, for the crews of merchant ships, and burned down in 1865; Danish captains then opened a new one.
