Moscow, Russia

Metropol

Moscow's largest Art Nouveau hotel (1899–1905), with Vrubel's majolica panel “Princess of Dreams”.

The Metropol stands on Teatralny Proezd, opposite the Bolshoi Theatre. Construction was initiated by Savva Mamontov to a design by William Walcot, with Lev Kekushev overseeing the work. After a fire in 1901 the frame was rebuilt in reinforced concrete.

Mikhail Vrubel (the “Princess of Dreams” panel), Alexander Golovin (ceramic panels) and the sculptor Nikolai Andreev (friezes) were brought in for the decoration. It is the largest surviving Moscow hotel built before 1917.

History

Built in 1899–1905, the hotel was fully completed in 1907. Since 2012 it has been owned by Alexander Klyachin (Azimut Hotels).
