L'Hotel in Pietra

A boutique hotel in the caves of Sasso Barisano: rooms carved straight into the tufa, and a terrace overlooking Matera Cathedral.

L'Hotel in Pietra is in Sasso Barisano, one of the two ancient cave districts of Matera that have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1993. Six rooms and three suites are carved straight into the rock: stone vaults, showers in grottoes and, in some rooms, old staircases and windows overlooking the Sassi.

Breakfast is served in a hall under high stone vaults or at tables outside. There is no parking at the hotel: cars are left in the new town a few minutes' walk away.

Interiors

Tufa and stone, vaulted ceilings, grottoes instead of bathrooms, pale fabrics and warm light — a cave with no loss of comfort.
