French Riviera, France
An 1870 villa on Cap d'Antibes, a hotel since 1889. A pool carved into the rocks and the Eden Roc pavilion above the sea.
The hotel on Cap d'Antibes began as a private villa, Villa Soleil, built in 1865–1870 in Napoleon III style by Hippolyte de Villemessant, founder of Le Figaro. In 1887 the Italian hotelier Antoine Sella bought it and in 1889 opened the Grand Hôtel du Cap.
In 1914 the Eden Roc pavilion was built away from the main building. The hotel is seasonal — check the dates on the official website.
In the 1920s the Americans Gerald and Sara Murphy rented the hotel for the whole summer — back then the Riviera was a winter resort. Writers of the “Lost Generation” came with them; Fitzgerald portrayed the hotel in “Tender Is the Night” as the Hôtel des Étrangers. After the First World War Antoine Sella built a seawater pool.
The garden and avenue lead to the rocks and the sea; the Eden Roc pavilion stands right above the water.
For the romantic Riviera and those who love a place with literary history.
